WHO ARE WE?
Welcome to the Down East Coal Ash Environmental and Social Justice Coalition!
We are a grassroots organization committed to protecting the environment and advocating for the communities most impacted by environmental injustice—particularly Black, Brown, and poor white communities across Eastern North Carolina. These communities have been disproportionately burdened with toxic living conditions, often due to corporate greed, environmental bullying, and inadequate regulatory oversight.
At Down East Coal Ash and Environmental Justice Coalition, we are dedicated to advancing climate justice, promoting community restoration, and building long-term community resilience.
OUR PURPOSE
Our purpose is to protect the environment and stand in solidarity with communities in Eastern North Carolina that have been historically exploited, marginalized, and harmed due to systemic racism and economic injustice.
What makes us different?

Our goals include stopping ongoing environmental harm, exposing those responsible, and ensuring accountability for the individuals and institutions that have caused these injustices.
Our Tenets
We advocate for a just transition toward 100% renewable energy, rooted in community restoration and proactive resilience planning and implementation.

At the heart of the Down East Coal Ash Environmental and Social Justice Coalition is a dedicated team committed to environmental justice and community empowerment.
Our leader, Bobby Jones, is a lifelong advocate for environmental and social equity across Eastern North Carolina.
McKenzie Hill, our intern from North Carolina A&T brings a passion for sustainability, youth engagement, mentorship and community organizing.
Our dynamic Youth Ambassadors — Nyasha, Megan, Markita, Aiden, and Amari. Leading the way in local outreach, education, and resilience-building.
Justin, our youngest and honorary member, is being actively molded by his experiences with the coalition. Growing into a future leader through learning, service, and community action.
Together, we are building a healthier, more just future for our communities.
